VP Debates

Who else is pretty excited about watching the VP debates? My family has already decided to make this a family night. I have been designated to bring the popcorn. The popular question nowadays is "how will Palin perform in the debate against Biden?" I would guess like how a deer performs in headlights. The Republicans acted as if they picked her because she was some kind of "Ace in the Hole" that we were underestimating. If her interviews are any indication, it is safe to say they were dead wrong. So, how do you really think she will do? On one hand, you have an experienced debater. On the other, you have someone who got tripped up on questions from Katie Couric. You decide.

Miss Jessie's Original

I first ran across Miss Jessie's in an article in Essence magazine. Miss Jessie's original is a line of hair care products specifically marketed towards African-Americans wishing to maintain natural hair and naturally curly hair. Its products consist of styling cremes, moisturizers, and deep conditioning treatments. The inventors of this line are multi-cultured sista's (their father African American, their mother Japanese) that found it hard to find a means to proper hair care growing up. This line is meant for those who wish to not damage their hair with hot combs and relaxers and do not want their hair weighed down with greasy styling products. Miss Jessie's has been featured in an assortment of fashion and beauty magazines and is a favorite among a slew of celebrities.

"Gotcha" Journalism?

It appears that every question directed to Sarah Palin is what she and John McCain like to call "gotcha" journalism. Even when it is a question asked by a Regular Joe voter.....and not a professional journalist. She was asked by this Regular Joe "What are you gonna do about Pakistan?". And so she answered the question, revealing her stance....that she agreed with attacking terrorist targets. Actually, her exact statement was "if that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should". I would also like to point out this exchange was captured on video.

Now she and McCain are actively trying to retract her statement seeing as how it coincides with Obama's statements (statements which McCain has publicly attacked). So now they are trying to claim her statement actually was "we're gonna do what we have to do to protect the United States of America". Did Palin and McCain seem to forget her original response was actually recorded?

It seems this is a woman of many excuses and not enough answers. Conservative journalist Kathleen Parker, who once upon a time rooted for Palin, put it best: "If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself."

If the Republicans hope to have even a sliver of a chance at defeating the Democrats, now is not the time for her to fumble while asked simple, soft core questions. She should already have a basic knowledge about all the questions asked of her and if McCain was not so inept, he would had made sure she did before even asking her to take on this responsibility. But I guess the fact she is a woman was good enough for him. I find that tactic rather insulting for two reasons. 1) He thought the American public was dumb enough to be side-tracked and forget about the real issues & 2) He could have at least got himself a smart woman. And I'm sure Hillary pretty much feels the same way...especially since they were trying to advertise Palin as being in the same league as her simply because she is a woman, nothing more. Sorry Palin, but you must also be intelligent to fully function in her league.

For more on what Kathleen Parker had to say about her once prospective VP choice, click here. She is just one of many people who is suffering from buyers remorse.

A Few of My Fav Beauty Products

Cashmere Hand and Body Lotion by Dremu:
Just about every fashion and beauty magazine on the market has raved about it. I have actually tried this product and I must say, this lotion truly has earned the right to be everyone's favorite. It keeps your skin supple and hydrated. An added bonus is that it eliminates the need for any other fragrance because it also has a refreshing, pleasant scent to it. According to it's official website, it contains Ylang-Ylang essential oil, famous for its subtle aphrodisiac scent. This lotion is perfect for those who suffer from rough, dry skin in the winter time. It is $38.00 per 8 fl. oz. bottle but I promise it is worth every penny. Visit their website for more information and to read other reviews: www.dremu.com

Clean:
The name says it all. This perfume smells like nothing but pure, hygienic cleanliness. That could be because the inventor of this perfume was inspired by, well, soap. There are a variety of scents to pick...everything from "Shower Fresh" to "Fresh Laundry". All day you literally smell like you just stepped out of the shower, even though you have been busting your butt at work. Check it out for yourself: www.cleanperfume.com

Neutrogena Body Oil:
This body oil works best when applied to damp skin, e.g. after a shower. It is good as another defense to seal and maintain skin moisture. I especially love how I feel after putting it on. I usually apply this before going to bed. The body oil has a subtle, lovely fragrance due to it's sesame ingredient. www.neutrogena.com

Victoria Secret's "Beauty Rush" Lip Gloss:
This lip gloss is rather impressive. I happened upon it around a year ago while shopping in VS. I bought only one at the time but once using it I went back to stock up before it was discontinued! Fortunate enough, it is still available. VS claims that it "tastes as delicious as they look" and I couldn't agree more. www2.victoriasecret.com

Splurge or Save

Below are a couple of fashion duplicates, with the only real difference being the price tag.

To the left is a Nili Loton wool pea coat available at Shop Bop, valued at $650.00. The coat is very stylish and can be worn whether you are dressed up or dressed down. The one on the right is a wool blend coat at Forever 21 that costs $34.80. It's an excellent knock off of the before-mentioned. But it is only meant for those not looking for warmth. It's obvious this coat is meant for the main purpose of looking cute and should not be relied on as cold weather protection if you live in an area where the winters are harsh.

And speaking of which, I advise everyone to invest in at least one quality winter coat; the term "quality" not meaning it has to be $650...but if you do have that kind of money to splurge, more power to you!

Shown on the left is a striped crossover hoodie by Guess. This hoodie has only one color option (shown above) and is priced at $89.00. The shawl collar sweater on the right is compliments of Wet Seal. You have the option of buying it in brown, black, or olive (shown above) at the affordable price of $19.50. This sweater is sexy and perfect for the fall.

Lucid Absinthe

In case you don't know, Lucid is an absinthe that was banned for close to 100 years in the U.S; that is, until it was finally legalized about a year ago. It is now legit to buy here in the states but it is VERY expensive...approximately $80 a bottle. Well anyway, a friend of mine and I finally tried some Lucid a few weeks ago. We did the whole preparation bit the way you're supposed to: the sugar cubes, the spoon, and the cold water. It was certainly interesting...not like anything else I have drank before. It does have the taste of black licorice, but not so bad that you can't drink it (I don't like black licorice, but I was able to stomach this drink just fine). The feeling was not like other drinks; very thoughtful, very introspective. But that might have been because we had researched it and expected it to be different. I've had many different drinks in my life, and this was like nothing I've had before. And no, we didn't hallucinate (the absinthe sold in the U.S. has very little thujone....you would die from alcohol poisoning long before having any hallucinations). We did feel a little strange though. After about an hour and a half, we quit and switched to our usual drink of preference.

If you are unfamiliar with the world of absinthe's, I would recommend trying a different brand first. Le Tourment Vert is cheaper than Lucid, as well as St George and Kubler.

Would I ever buy another bottle? Probably not, especially given the price. But I will drink it again, if someone else purchases it!

Home Fragrance Oil Warmers

The way you keep your home is a reflection on you. So, make your home smell as queenly as you with an electric home fragrance oil warmer. These are by far better at diffusing scents than candles. And another added bonus is that they add ambiance to any room. I prefer the wooden ones, which I have linked below. They come in a number of designs and are inexpensive.

Don't be afraid to mix oils together to come up with your own signature home-scent. Also, make sure to use water and add only about 3-4 drops of oil. If you use too much oil, it can be headache inducing. Enjoy!

Viktor and Rolf "Flowerbomb" Parfum Spray

I ran into this scent by pure chance a few months ago while shopping in Nordstroms. The smell of this perfume is absolutely amazing. For you ladies who are not fans of perfume or are very picky about what you wear, this one is definitely worth a try. It is not overpowering by any means. And it does not have a floral smell as the name would suggest. It is soft and sensuous with an expensive and musk undertone. A dab on the wrists and neck lasts all day and the smell does not drastically change once on for a while as with other perfumes. I have not met a man yet who has not loved it. Maybe that is why this perfume is pricier than others....but it's worth working in your budget!

1.7 oz bottle: $95.00
3.5 oz bottle $150.00

Say What?!

I'm sure everybody has already heard that T.I has been ordered to pay an additional $1,000/month towards child support of his 2 sons with jobless LaShon Dixon. In addition to the extra money, he was also ordered to continue paying for the boys to attend private school, uninsured medical bills and expenses related to the children’s extracurricular activities. It has been stated that T.I is very happy with the court order. I admire his ability to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative. Because had it been me, I would find the whole ordeal very insulting. Especially the fact that LaShon is STILL unhappy. Her lawyer stated that "she was just getting by with the children, while they lived a different life with their father". JUST GETTING BY?! Say what?! Well, I have the perfect solution for her "troubles": how about she find herself a job other than her side hustle of gold-digging and exploiting her children? Anybody with good sense knows not all that money is going towards her sons. It takes a very sorry person to abuse the justice system, making it harder for those who truly are deserving.

The Color of Water

This book is, indeed, a tribute to the author's mother. In it, the author, a man whose mother was white and his father black, tells two stories: that of his mother and his own. Tautly written in spare, clear prose, it is a wonderful story of a bi-racial family who succeeded and achieved the American dream, despite the societal obstacles placed in its way.

The author's mother was a Polish Orthodox Jew who migrated to America at the age of two with her family during the early nineteen twenties. They ultimately settled down in Virginia, where she led an isolated and lonely life; shunned by whites because she was Jewish and shunned by blacks because she was white. She was raised in a predominantly black neighborhood, where her father, a despicable and harsh man who brutalized his handicapped wife, ran a local grocery store, where he priced gouged his black clientele.

She left home and moved to New York when she was nineteen and never looked back. She met and married the author's father, a black man, when mixed race marriages were still frowned upon by both whites and blacks. Still, she always felt more comfortable around blacks than around whites. When he died sixteen years later, she married another black man who nurtured her eight children by the author's father and proceeded to give her four more children.

The author tells of his childhood, of his family, and of the issue of race that ultimately colored his life while growing up in predominantly black neighborhoods, where his mother stood out like a sore thumb because of the color of her skin. It was always an issue his mother avoided discussing with him, as for her it was not an issue. It was not until the author wrote this book that his mother discussed the issue of race within the context of her own life. From this dialogue emerges a fascinating look at the issues of race, as well as religion, and how it impacts on an individual's identity within our race conscious society.

It is also a very personal story. While the author's family was economically disadvantaged, his eccentric and independent mother always stressed education. She was a strict disciplinarian who brooked no nonsense from her twelve children. A convert to Christianity through her first husband, with whom she founded a Baptist church, she provided her children with the will to succeed. Consequently, all twelve eventually went to college and did her proud. The story of this unique family is told from two distinct, parallel perspectives: that of the author and that of his mother. While both are interesting, it is his mother's story that dominates this beautifully written book, which is, indeed, a tribute to her. It is truly a story told from the heart, as the love that the author has for his mother is evident with every written word.

Ba-rack the Vote!

Everybody is talking about the presidential campaign, from normal people such as myself to the rich and famous. An array of celebrities, like Alicia Keyz and Kym Whitley, are broadcasting their support for presidential hopeful Barack Obama through fashion wear. There are a host of websites that are selling t-shirts, hats, etc. for Obama supporters. You can also go to Obama's official website to browse through their online store. In addition to his site, below are a couple more links to other online stores to shop for yours!

concert this summer in London, England

Before I close out, I would like to stress the importance of voting. Many feel that their vote will not make a difference, but if 1000 people are saying that and not voting there goes 1000 votes towards change. As Obama stated, America deserves much better. Click here to get started!
